EU REJECTS US BANANA PROPOSAL
The dispute between the US and the European Union over the EU's banana import regime intensified, when Brussels rejected a US proposal that the two sides should seek a rapid settlement in the World Trade Organisation. The regime guarantees producers in former British and French colonies in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific preferential access to the US market, at the expense of cheaper fruit grown in Latin America.
